I'm a retired educator (teacher/principal) who moved from Northern California to Payson, Arizona in September, 2010.
This blog will chronicle my adventures as I explore a different ecosystem and build my new home.

Car Show

Green Valley Park in Payson was busy this weekend with hundreds of cars on display.

The show started with a parade of cars around the perimeter of Payson.

Randy took his camera......I had dog/puppy duty.

This one was one of my favorites......leather rubble seat and trunk in the back.

Randy took photos of Fords to share with friends who have a 1940 Ford. They are the folks who gave us Argo.

Events like this help the town's economy.

Iris Blooms/Weather Station Data Site

Thank goodness for the Iris! They tolerate our climate and nothing eats them!

A neighbor was thinning out her beds and gave us these last spring. They have benefited from the summer garden watering. We will have to thin them out this year.

These are doing well in the front of the house alongside the driveway.

Randy used a macro lens for this shot.

This is the first wildflower we see but what is it? I have tried to find it in the wildflower books. Is it some kind of primrose?

You can see our weather data on these two sites. They display the data slightly different.

West Yard Improvements

No rain or wind so the lattice got painted.

It will look nicer with plants around it.

Window boxes were painted as well. They are going to need extra support. The corbels are not going to be strong enough once dirt and plants are in the boxes.

Thirteen garden beds of various sizes. Randy has planted: peas, broccoli, onions, carrots, tomatoes, beets, radishes and cucumbers so far.

We had to redo all of the garden irrigation. We now have patio and garden zones. The dirt is all torn up and it feels like we are starting all over in the garden area. We are not sure what we are going to put down between the beds.....maybe just wood chips.

This is a bucket of lettuce. It's on rollers so we can roll it out of the sun. I am looking forward to lots of salads!

Argo (and Cooper) Photos

He's 8 weeks old tomorrow. Yep, he's usually this dirty. But a damp microfiber cloth fixes him up.

It's a good thing he's so cute.....he does get into mischief.

He's had one accident in the house so far. He does know where all the doors are but he hasn't learn to go to the door when he needs to pee/poop.

He and Cooper are pretty good friends most of the time. Sometimes Cooper growls and lets Argo know that he wants to be left alone.

He drinks a ton of water and has to be taken outside often.

Last night he woke up at 11:00 and needed to go outside. He then slept until 5:30......whoohoo!
(He has been waking up at 2:00 and 4:00.)

He's a lot of work but an awful lot of fun too.

Plants, Pups and a New Weather Station

These seedlings live in the greenhouse at night and come out for sunshine during the day. We should be able to put them in the garden in 3-4 weeks.

Believe it or not, these pansies made it through the winter.....hard to believe with the amount of snow we got. I might try planting them in the shade on the west yard. They won't make it in the window boxes in the summer.

This is a tomato plant that was getting too big for the greenhouse. The accordion, mini-greenhouse thing-a-ma-bob should protect it from the cold. We were in the 40s at night but we have a few days of 30's coming up.

A favorite spot for Argo.....snuggled up on my outdoor shoes in the garage. He works hard to get the socks out of the shoes.

Cooper is excited. With the warmer temperatures during the day, the lizards are back! He loves to look for lizards in the rocks.

We have a new weather station. It's from Davis Instruments....a Vantage Pro2. It eventually will go on the roof, but Randy is testing it out right now on the south deck. The station says we are getting 30 mile an hour winds but I bet if it was on the roof, the number would be higher. It is SO WINDY today (and dusty). We were supposed to get some rain but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

New Pup

We traveled to Brawley, CA to visit our neighbors, Karen and Jerry, because their black lab had pups. Jerry and Karen have a hay (alfalfa) contracting business in Brawley but they also have a house in Payson in our neighborhood. We, of course, chose one of their pups to take home with us.

Here's Argo....he's a male and is 7 weeks old. He went to the vet yesterday and weighs 14 pounds.

He LOVES to eat and be outside. He is constantly underfoot.

Cooper is being so patient with him. He lets him chew his ears and he snuggles with him for a bit. I am sure Cooper will enjoy him more when he is a little older. Coop wants a buddy to romp with and explore.
